Margaret Ross, Senior Lecturer for Dental Care Professionals and Programme Director BSc (Hons) Oral Health Sciences at Edinburgh Dental Institute has been awarded the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Dental Faculty UK Gold Medal.  This is the first occasion in the history of the Faculty that this medal has been awarded to somebody who is not a dentist.

Professor Angus Walls, Director of Edinburgh Dental Institute commented

“I was delighted to learn that Margaret had been awarded the Faculty Gold Medal by the dental Faculty off RCS Edinburgh. This is the first time this award has been given to a “non-dentist” and reflects both the widening dental workforce and also the huge role Margaret has played over the years as an advocate for dental hygienists and therapists. Margaret was a strong campaigner to enable therapists and hygienists to work as independent practitioners and continued to work hard with Scottish Government to produce a practical solution for this move by the General Dental Council some years ago. She has worked tirelessly with the Faculty to develop training pathways for therapists to extend their clinical skills and as an advocate for an often forgotten part of the dental workforce. The award of this medal is a just and wholly deserved recognition of her contributions to the profession over the years.”

This award is made to individuals who have made a significant contribution to dentistry during their careers and have undertaken significant work for the Faculty. Margaret has  been involved with the Colloge for almost fifteen years and has worked closely with the Education Department.  She currently chairs the Advisory Board for Dental Care Professionals and is leading the development of new diplomas in Implant Care and Paediatric Dentistry for Dental Hygenists and Therapists.  The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh are very keen to support Dental Care Professionals and Margaret is the epitome of the very best of this vital group.

The Dean of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Professor William Saunders was keen to stress the significance of this award.

“It is an award for excellence. I have known Margaret Ross for nearly 30 years and during that time she has worked to improve the education and standing of dental care professionals, particularly dental hygienists and therapists. The award is very well deserved.’

This unique award will be presented to Margaret at a ceremony in November .
