Dr Nirmal Shah is a consultant and specialist orthodontist in Edinburgh and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. His areas of special interest include temporary anchorage devices, cleft lip and palate care, orthognathic surgery, and aligner-based orthodontics.

Background

Dr Shah graduated from the University of Dundee before undertaking orthodontic specialty training and completing his consultant training in Edinburgh. He has extensive experience working in multidisciplinary teams and provides care across orthognathic, restorative, and cleft services. In addition to his NHS role, he works in specialist private practice and is actively involved in postgraduate teaching, research supervision, and service development, with a focus on improving patient pathways and outcomes. Dr Shah also contributes to the wider profession through his work on national and international committees and currently sits on the Education Board of the European Orthodontic Society.
