Edinburgh Dental Institute are delighted to congratulate Dr Abdullah Aly Alkalaly our first graduate of the DClinDent programme – with distinction - and the first graduate of the Doctor of Dentistry at University of Edinburgh. Image Dr Abdullah Aly Alkalaly Abdullah is also the 2017 recipient of the Nairn Wilson Medal for Clinical and Academic Excellence Award. The medal is awarded to the student who performs best over our four programmes of study, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, Paediatric Dentistry and Prosthodontics at Edinburgh Dental Institute. Abdullah graduated with honours in 1998 from Faculty of Dentistry at Cairo University followed by an internship at the same university. He worked as a dentist until 2004 in a polyclinic private practice in Cairo followed by eighteen months in Japan as a researcher at the Orthodontic department Kagoshima University. Abdullah moved to Hong Kong to undertake a PhD in Orthodontics moving onto an Orthodontic Specialist position at HMC in Qatar. In 2014, Abdullah joined us at Edinburgh Dental Institute to start his DClinDent in Orthodontics. Additionally, Abdullah achieved membership in orthodontics of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (M.Orth RCSEd) and membership in orthodontics of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons MRACDS(Orth). In addition, Abdullah holds a masters in Health Informatics from the University of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. In his specific discipline of orthodontics, Abdullah and his colleagues, as trainees, from the programme had the chance to be involved in the Scotland wide orthodontic programme (SWOP) which had a collaborative educational process between EDI, University of Glasgow and University of Dundee and their respective trainees. During his studies in Edinburgh Abdullah was joined in Edinburgh by his wife, Bodore, a Research Fellow at Edinburgh Dental Institute, and their three children. The whole family have enjoyed living in Edinburgh and have explored Scotland to the full taking in the beautiful Highlands and participating in amazing experiences from horse riding to archery. Abdullah's statement: I am truly honoured to be receiving such a prestigious award. However, I could not have achieved my award without the help of every one involved at EDI from the director to the supervisors to nurses, lab technicians and the support and management staff at all levels. I was very fortunate to be accepted for the highly competitive programme and to be part of an institute which places great importance on excellence in dental education, and feel fully supported enabling me to achieve this award. The programme support not only involves guidance in every step to achieving the final degree of DClinDent, but goes beyond that by providing all the necessary guidance and tools to pass the prestigious membership examinations of the Royal Colleges.
